From my study of energy, I have concluded that the following 16 can be considered the principal sources of energy, for light, heat, and/or power (in more or less chronological order): Man's muscles, Fire, Animals, Wood, Wind, Running water (hydropower), Geothermal, Coal, Petroleum, Natural gas, Nuclear, Sun (solar), Oil shale, Bituminous sands, Solid Wastes, Hydrogen.
Although not considered primary sources of energy, the introduction of the steam engine, and electricity, have been revolutionary factors in the application of energy. Our Industrial Revolution began with the introduction of the steam engine in the early 1800s. Electricity started becoming of general use in the U.S. about 1900.
