Mental Toughness

Tiger Woods' father Earl, a Vietnam Green Beret, repeatedly told his son, "You'll never meet another person as tough as you in your entire life." Tiger believed him. Because of his mental toughness, Tiger has overcome the death of his father, has made high pressure shots time after time, and is regarded as the greatest golfer on the planet. In the U. S. Open, which concluded today, Tiger again displayed his toughness by playing only two months after knee surgery and often grimacing with pain when making a drive. And on Saturday making a long put on the 18th hole, with the world watching his every move. to tie the leader Rocco Mediate and cause a play-off today. And Tiger again today came from behind and made a put when he had to. And speaking of mental toughness, that is what the Celtics coach Doc Rivers has repeatedly preached to his players. And the Celtics are now only one game away from becoming the NBA champions. So just what is this "mental toughness," --that seems so important if you want to be a winner? To me it means TOTAL concentration on the task at hand--entirely focused, so as to be oblivious to the crowd , the noise,, any pain or disability, or weariness. To be fully confident, but not over-confident; and not thinking of how good or poor you are; but total concentration in being the best that you can be.
