James Madison
Today is the birthday of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. He was the principal author of the Constitution, and was responsible f or the first ten amendments to the Constitution. He did as much as any American in building a strong federal government. As a child he was frail and sickly. A weak speaking voice prevented him from taking up a career as a minister. So he turned his attention to politics. Madison was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, and together they formed the Democratic-Republican Party. Dolley Madison, the wife of James, was well known as a hostess during the administration of both Jefferson and Madison.
