Hannibal, MO
This is the Mississippi River. What a joy it was to spend a part of a glorious afternoon just looking at it. I consider the river at this point a branch, leading to its junction with the Missouri at St. Louis. The early explorers goofed in deciding that, from the junction of the MS and MO rivers at St. Louis, it was farther upstream towards MN than upstream to MT. Actually, the river from MT all the way to the Gulf should be called the Missouri River, but since the "Mississippi" is so well known, I'm going along with calling it the Missouri-Mississippi River. The Missouri-Mississippi is 3710 miles long--from Red Rock, MT to the Gulf. It is the longest river in North America and fourth longest in the world--after the Nile, Amazon and the Chang (Yangtze). In Picture 39 on our pictures web, Tom Sawyer's house is on the left; Huck Finn's house is a very small two room house in the back of Sawyers'; and Becky Thatcher's home is on the right, across the street from Tom's . Now, when I think about Tom and his wild adventures, I have a good picture of his neighborhood.
