Live Jazz

I was pleasantly surprised the other morning when I dropped in to see my good friend Jack at Carondelet Manor. He was assembled with a group listening to a jazz quartet. Sure enough, there was Vince Bilardo at the drums and Loren Pickford leading the group with his alto sax. These are not just ordinary musicians. Vince for many years had one of Kansas City's best big bands. He came to Kansas City as the Principal Percussionist for the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchesta and was with them for some 23 years. Loren, during his 48 year career as a saxophonist, flutist, pianist and composer, has performed with groups all over the world. He came to K. C. from New Orleans, where he had performed with various jazz groups, including The New Orleans All Stars of Jazz. Both Vince and Loren have their own groups now. Presently Loren is performing at the Golden Ox on Friday and Saturday nights from 6:30 to 10:30. Vince and Friends are performing at the Mermaid Court on the Country Club Plaza beginning at 5 PM Thurs., Sept. 11. What makes these gentlemen extra special: Vince is 80 and Loren can't be far behind.
