Adventures in Learning

Today I attended my final session of Shepherds' Center's Adventures in Learning at Central United Methodist Church. Starting Sept. 19 Adventures will be held at South-Broadland Presbyterian Church. I started attending Adventures in 1984, following my retirement from the Bench. Although I have served in many different capacities, my favorite role has been that of teaching. Some 17 classes; all but one of different subjects. Some of the greatest joys in life are learning about things , learning how to do things, and creating things and ideas. Adventures has furnished me the opportunity as to all of these. And I believe in making it fun. I had one class called FUN , depicted in attached photo. My step-granddaughter Jessica and I are demonstrating exercises, after having received clown make-ups from our professional clown Marie Kellogg. Recalling a few of the fun things from other classes: holding a class out on the south lawn for my session on nature in THE SEVEN MYSTERIES OF LIFE; in LEARNING ABOUT THE MIDEAST, assembling as delegates from the various countries at sessions of the United Nations; in LEARNING ABOUT CHINA, collecting letters for the Chinese, which Jan nd I took for a conference in Nanning, and bringing back letters from the Chinese; in THE JOY OF JAZZ, some 45 of us going to the new Jazz Museum and returning to the Noon Forum to the tune of When the Saints Come Marching In; as part of the OLYMPICS, bringing in the torch and having competition by nations in such events as bagel toss, rope jumping, basketball dribbling and geography; in OUR GOVERNMENT, having moot sessions of the City Council, MO House of Representatives and the U. S. Senate; and in RIGHT AND WRONG, Jan and I doing Yin and Yang dramas to begin discussions on moral issues.
