Old Bible
This is a 25 pound family Bible published about 1884 . It was recently given to me by my nephew Bob. It was owned by my grandfather John Wesley Smith, who was shot through his thigh at the Battle of Ware Bottom Church on May 20, 1864. John Wesley lived in West Pennsylvania. After his second wife died in 1887, he moved with his two young sons Charles and Levi (my Dad) to a farm near Wellsville, KS. He married Ida in Wellsville in 1888. Since the Bible appears to be unused (no entries are made in it), I conclude that the Bible was a gift--perhaps a wedding gift. My neighbor found stuck in the book a penny postcard that was sent to "J W Smith, Wellsville, Kansas." It is dated 11/23/00, from Baker & Co., Keokuk, IA, advertizing various home remedies such as Egyptian Salve, Turkish Liniment and German Kidney Cure. The book has hundreds of interesting Biblical illustrations, some of which are in color. Among the many features of the book: Principal events of the history of the world; History of the religious denominations of the world; Scenes and incidents of the lives of the principal characters of the Old Testament; Household dictionary of the Bible; History of the books of the Bible: the Psalms of David in Metre. If you should be interested in viewing the Bible, or showing it to a group, please let me know.
