Constitutionaly the country is a democracy, but it is generally considered an authoritarian state with limited civil rights. It is one of the two double land-locked countries in the world. The other being Liechtenstein. Uzbekistan is now the world's second largest exporter of cotton. It is the only country in Central Asia with a subway system. Uzbek is the official language, although Russian remains very important. Islam is the principal religion, mostly Sunni.
