Rip Van Winkle

I felt like Rip Van Winkle this morning, in attending the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at the Hyatt Regency. I attended the very first one--at the Muehlebach--47 years ago. I attended quite a few of these annual Breakfasts in the early years. Back in those days, I was well acquainted with many of the participants, including lawyers and business men and the founder, Clare Schroeder of the City National Bank. Today I saw only three people, including Mayor Funkhouser, that I even recognized; all of recent origin. After the Breakfast, in the spirit of Rip, I walked on the ramp towards Union Station., I took pause to recollect my many vivid memories of this area, including my arriving by myself' at the Union Station--from Paola--when I was 13--to visit my father who was an accountant with Stalcup Oil Co. on East 5th St. What an exhilarating experience it was--to emerge from the station into the hustle and bustle of the big city and catch a streetcar to go north on Main--all by myself. Having lived in Kansas City, Missouri for the last 62 years, I have very vivid memories of events and people, related to all areas of the city. It was kind of nice to do a little dreaming this morning. Honestly, I did feel like Rip Van Winkle.
