I thought he made two points in the Republican debate last night that merit consideration:
(1) A national consumption tax to replace the income tax. There would be exemption on purchases of necessity. It would have to be brought in gradually. As the consumption tax increased the income tax could be lowered.
(2) Creation of jobs that would help the development of alternative power and slow the global warming. This would be a great economic stimulant, but its effect would not be immediate One of the most effective measures of FDR in helping us get out of the great depression was providing jobs for needed public works thru the WPA and other programs. I like the idea of providing jobs rather than just handing out cash, for those able to work.
