The Rally Photograph

A massive parade is passing Lincoln's home August 8, 1860. This was a memorable day in Springfield, IL. The parade is in support of Lincoln's candidacy for the presidency. Lincoln is standing on the front porch in a white suit. Wife Mary is watching from the left first floor window. Son Willie is on the second floor leaning out of the second window from the left. A float carrying 33 young women, dressed in white, representing the 33 states of the Union , is passing by the house. Behind the float is a buggy carrying one young woman. She repressents the territory of Kansas, and the sign by her buggy says, "Won't you let me in?" (Sorry--above copy doesn't do justice to this wonderful photograph. I have ordered an 8 x 10 copy from the Chicago History Museum).
