Our Studebaker
Today is the 100th birthday of the Model T Ford. The introduction of the Model T really launched the American car culture. Actually, a very historic event. No, the car pictured is not a Ford. This picture is the closest thing I could find depicting the Studebaker touring car that my family had in Paola from about 1920 to 1930. Except we never had the top down. Curtains were put up for the cold weather. My Dad would have to crank it, and he had to check the hand gas and spark a time or two before it was ready to go. He would have to drain the water from the radiator after each time it was used in the cold weather. On a long trip--like fifty miles--you could count on having at least one flat tire. That's why you carried along at least a couple of spare tires. Our car had two middle seats that you pulled up from the floor. So it would hold eight passengers; nine, if you put a board between the two middle seats. And there was no TV in the car.
