Today I visited the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, located at its new quarters just south of the Liberty Memorial. It's a little different than when I was a boy and , with my Dad, visited the bank in the tall building at 10th and Grand. Then we went into the building primarily to go the observatory on the top, since it was the tallest building in Kansas City. I still remember those tall guards that seemed to be everywhere. Although much of what you see in the new building is a little boring, I thought that the visit was worthwhile. The interior of the building is something to behold, with a great panoramic view of the Liberty Memorial and the downtown skyscrapers. It was quite a shock to see 40 million dollars in $100 bills stacked up before you (behind heavy glass). Most interesting were the robotic vehicles running hither and yon, transporting parts of the billions of dollars located in the vault. The museum is open Mon thru Fri 8:30 to 4:30 for self-guided tours. Tours for groups must be arranged several weeks in advance--by calling
