311th Street
In this picture, you are looking west down 311th Street In Miami County, Kansas. Paola is 8 miles to the west. Louisburg is to the east and north. The Hornbuckle farmhouse is one mile west and one half mile north, at 30520 Pflumm Road. The picture shows the dividing line between "Aunt Minnie's farm" (in the foreground) and an 80 acre farm owned by my father, L.B. Smith, in the 1920s. The current address of the Smith farm would be 11895 W. 311th Street. So, why is 311th Street the subject of this blog? When I rode with my dad in his Model T Ford Pickup down a dusty or muddy narrow unmarked dirt road way out to his "Far Farm" I could not have dreamed of driving down a paved road with a Kansas City street numbering---to a farm located next to a farm to be owned by my brother's wife. 311th Street--what a laugh! Why not call it 42nd Street, so you will think you are approaching Times Square? But, as I drove down this road last Saturday, for the first time in many many years, I was in a dream world. It was hard to contain my emotions. Going down a straight paved road east from Paola, past my dad's former dairy farm in a matter of a few minutes and on to the Far Farm, almost before I could catch my breath. It was like a road leading to Rome. So, I accept the change. Hail to 311th Street!
