Thomas Jefferson

This is his birthday. I have been handing out nickels to people that I meet--because each nickel, with a picture of the man and of his home, is a remembrance of this wonderful man. He was the author of that great document, the Declaration of Independence. A committee was appointed to write it, but it was Tom's work, with only very slight changes by the committee. I have given lots of thought to this part of the Declaration: "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." I am wondering if Tom were alive today, would he go along with this 21st century modification: "We hold this truth to be self evident, that all humans are endowed by their creator with the unalienable and equal right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
If this seems sacrilegious, perish my thought.
