Our present immigration problem does not relate to the millions of Europeans that immigrated to the United States in the nineteenth and early 20th centuries, such as depicted here. The big problem relates to the millions that have entered our country illegally from Mexico, beginning in the 20th century. A problem has been created, to which there is no good solution. The presidential candidates are afraid to get into the real issue of what to do about the 12 million illegals already in this country. The closest thing to a solution was probably the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006, which was passed in the Senate, but not in the House. It would have provided a way for the illegals to become citizens.
I think the long-term solution is to provide better job opportunities for the Mexicans in Mexico. Senator Biden has stated that Mexico is a very wealthy country and should be able to provide these jobs. Corruption in the Mexican government is apparently one of the big stumbling blocks. How can the United States help in creating these jobs in Mexico, so there would be no more incentive for Latinos to try to enter US illegally than the Canadians?
