Joel Osteen, pastor of this church, was interviewed on 60 minutes last night. This is considered the largest church in America. Each week over 38,000 people attend services and there are an estimated 7 million viewers on TV . Since there are no crosses or religious symbols in the church building, a former sports arena, one might question whether it should even be considered a church. But regardless, it is interesting to speculate as to what makes the services so popular, and what other churches might learn. The key factors : Osteen has an engaging personality, very postive and upbeat, and much smiling. He promotes self-esteem and hope. He preaches that for those who believe there will come good health, wealth and happiness. Much excitement is created in a Hollywood type atmosphere. The audience particpates--like standing with upraised arms and swaying to rock music.
