Emotions and Marriage

Like in the stories and songs, I have always thought of a marriage as resulting from two people falling in love. But I am reminded from the program for Bad Dates, playing at the Copaken Theatre, this has not always been the case. "Matrimony was historically based on power and political and economic advantage rather than EMOTIONS. In the late 18th century, about the time that the industrial revolution made books widely available to the general populace, personal happiness and emotional intimacy became the significant factors in selecting a mate. Love had hit the free market."

In view of the fact that more than a third of present marriages end in divorce, should we go back to the old system ?
