EVERYTHING in the universe is constantly changing: including the sky, the celestial bodies, our earth, our buildings, our bodies, and the cells and atoms within our bodies. Some day our sun will change form and "die," causing our earth to wonder off and causing all life on the earth to die. But nothing just vanishes--just changes in arrangement and form. Does that mean that our lives have no meaning--because we are just tiny specks existing for a fraction of a second in the annals of endless time? NO. We don't really know what it's all about, but it is obvious that there is order to everything and that everything has a purpose. We are a part of "nature." Why worry about what's going to happen upon the changing of our bodies to other forms. Live in the NOW. We must have faith that some power cares and that there is reason for everything.

TUESDAY'S TWEET: Pacemaker

I learned yesterday that I can have a check-up of my pacemaker without leaving my apartment. I will be given a gadget that has an attachment that I can place above my pacemaker, and I plug in a wire to my telephone outlet, enabling them to check my pacemaker at my cardiologist's office. Amazing!

Today, at my internist's request, I had a "bone survey" of my whole body. There was reason, but no urgent reason for the request. At least 30 xray pictures were taken--costing thousands of dollars--but at no expense to me because of medicare and supplemental insurance. In view of there being millions of people not able to obtain even basic medical care, was it fair for a 96 year old man to have these xrays taken?

Our Children and China

What do they have in common? The United States Government is broke. We are fighting wars and providing welfare on borrowed money. Our children and China are helping make this possible. China is loaning us money now. Our children and their children will have to pay higher taxes to help pay off the enormous public debt we have created.

Underbody Warming Blanket

For many years I have had one of above on my bed. This electrical blanket, with temperature controls, is placed underneath my bottom sheet, and you are scarcely aware of it's being there. You don't have the concerns that you might have with an electrical blanket on top of you, and I like the feeling of warmth underneath my body. I leave it in place the year-round, and occasionally use it even now if I should get cold in the early morning. (My mate likes the room temperature, with the air conditioning, to be quite cold at night.)
I learned about my blanket on the internet. Google can find the company that made mine at Perfect Fit Industries.

Formality

How wonderful--Mayor James' picnic at Starlight Theatre for the city employees and others with connections with the city--instead of a formal inaugural ball, celebrating his coming into office. As Sly said, "You don't have to get all dressed up in order to meet people." This doesn't mean that all formal dress should be abolished, but there is far too much emphasis on formal wear and formal parties connected with the arts. Enjoyment of the arts is for everyone. At the picnic it was brought out that when Mayor James was in high school he was "in a band that opened for Jefferson Airplane in the late 1960s." Interestingly, with my family, I was driving to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in the late 60s when we noticed that lots of people were going to an adjacent building to see the Jefferson Airplane. We thought it rather strange that so many people were going to view an airplane.

College Debate

I attended a demonstration of debating by the KU debate team at the Edwards Campus here in KC last Sunday, thinking I might learn something that would be helpful in conducting my Discussion Group here at Kingswood. I was shocked to learn that the debating now is done in fast talk. The debaters in their tournaments talk so fast that the average person cannot possibly understand them. And I think it is horrible. Instead of promoting better speech, it does quite the contrary. The apparent reason for this fast talk, the faster you speak, the more arguments that you can make, and the opposing team loses points in the judges' scoring if arguments are not rebutted. , A documentary film entitled Fast Talk, based upon the champion Northwestern U. team, is discussed at fasttalkthemovie.com/more/

Perfect Ending

Mayor Funkhouser's veto of the rezoning of the Country Club Plaza site to allow construction of the office building for the Polsinelli law firm is the perfect ending for the long controversy. Funkhouser leaves office as a stinker in the eyes of many, but it brings finality to the dispute. Polsinelli has already decided not to build at the location in question. But the council voted in favor of the re-zoning, putting the city in a better light, so that the city can concentrate on a new site in KCMO for the building. And the threat of a referendum is avoided. The new council should not override the veto. I think our new mayor and council are going to really get things moving for Kansas City.

Monet

A friend's recent visit to Giverny, 45 miles west of Paris, Claude Monet's home for the last 43 years of his life, has renewed my interest in Monet. He and Renoir are my favorite impressionist painters. My friend showed me pictures of Giverny that were breath-taking. As are pictures you can see at giverny-France.com Today Jan and I viewed the Monet's Water Lilies exhibit at Nelson Museum. This exhibit is on display until August 7 and is well worth seeing. I visited the Orangerie, in Paris, which houses about 12 of his large Water Lily paintings, with Rosemary in1977. And I viewed the three paintings from the Kansas City, Cleveland and St. Louis museums when they were last together--in St. Louis--in 1980. Other favorite paintings of Monet are his haystacks.

One of the greatest joys in my life was having my very own car--a used chevrolet--that I could get in and drive any place I wanted to go. So let's appreciate and enjoy this very valuable privilege while we can.

Macular Degeneration

Three weeks ago I learned from my eye doctor that I have wet macular degeneration in my right eye. With my left eye closed, I just see a black circle straight ahead. Several years ago the FDA approved a treatment that at least slows the degeneration. Once a month I get an injection of Lucentis in my right eye and twice a day I take an eye vitamin called PreserVision. But the point of this blog is not about me, but rather a test that you can easily take yourself to aid in determining if you have macular degeneration. For several years my doctor has checked me for this ailment, and I was told to check myself to determine if I have good vision looking straight ahead. I had no problem in this regard, but I was always looking with both eyes. Recently I was surprised to learn that in looking straight ahead with just one eye (my right eye), I see the black circle, completely blotting out my view of a face or other object straight ahead.

A New CBS Anchor

Katie Couric is leaving as anchor for CBS Evening News. which remains No. 3 in the evening news. According to today's New York Times, Scott Pelley, lead reporter for 60 Miuutes, could have Katie's job if he wants it. In my opinion, Scott is "the greatest," and could no doubt make CBS No. 1 in the evening news. But there is doubt as to which is the more important role for him. 60 Minutes has about 15 million viewers, while CBS Evening News has only about 5 million viewers. It will be interesting to see what happens. Scott will remain a favorite of mine, regardless of his role.

Deep Belly Breathing

Most people don't take in nearly enough oxygen in their breathing--because of upper chest breathing instead of deep belly breathing. To practice and develop deep belly breathing: stand up; blow out through your mouth--FULLY exhaling--pretending you are trying to blow out 25 birthday cake candles. Then you will be forced to PUSH OUT your belly as you inhale, taking in the deepest breath that you can.

Energy Solution

I think United States should target the earliest possible date for the elimination of the importation of oil from the Mideast. And that our big push should be towards solar energy. I believe that eventually solar energy will be the main source of power. But this will take time. In the meantime, we can place more reliance on producing more oil from within United States and from friendly countries. And the mining of natural gas, of which we have plenty. More immediatly available, if necessary, is our coal.

REBELLIONS

Rebellions or insurgencies are erupting all over the world. What should be the involvement of our country? I am inclined to agree with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of MN, who was interviewed on NBC's Today Show this morning concerning our involvement in Libya. She disagrees with the so-called Obama Doctrine of using military power for the purpose of humanitarian aid. She points out that in Libya we don't know who all is involved with the rebels. That al Queda may be involved. There is no assurance of a stable democratic government even if the rebels gain control. And it now appears that the rebels cannot win without other countries providing weapons, training, continuation of air support. and perhaps ground troops. Is this going to be another Iraq or Afghanistan? The Congresswoman thinks our aid for insurgents in foreign countries shoul∂ be limited to strictly humanitarian aid, without using military force. What do you think?

NCAA Basketball Tournament

It seems that the goal of every Division 1 college basketball team is to get into the Big Dance (NCAA Tournament). The sad part is that every team that gets in, save one, ends the season on a sad note. What a shame! Case in point: the University of Kansas lost only 2 games during the whole season, prior to the tournament. They won the Big 12 Conference; they won the Big 12 post season tournament; at the end of the regular season they were nationally ranked as No. 2. Yet, the players were in tears and feeling horrible at the end of the basketball season. That doesn't seem right.

It is difficult for a group to reach an agreement on an issue by arguing with one another. In arguing you are just interested in presenting your opinion and you listen to the opposition just enough in order to refute. Whereas in a good discussion, you should listen carefully to opposing views, and attempt to agree with anything that you can. Then by reasoning, and perhaps some compromising, the parties can reach the maximum agreement.

This raises a very interesting question. Aristotle would probably disagree. It seems to me, the answer lies with your definition of morality. Leaf or 911 ?

I can't decide whether my next car should be a Leaf or a 911. The Porsche 911 is available now. However it's a little expensive--some $161,000 with the equipment I would want. Whereas the Nissan Leaf would cost only about $33,000. But the Leaf, the first all-electric car to be built by a major auto company, won't be out until December, and I'm too late to get on the waiting list for the first 20,000. Another thing favoring the 911 is its speed. With 500 horsepower, it should be able to go pretty fast. Another thing I just now thought of, is head room. The 911 is so sleek, I'm afraid head room might be a problem. Maybe the top would come down, but it wouldn't be so comfortable driving that way when it's raining or 20 below. Which do you think I should buy?

At our Men's Breakfast at Kingswood today, David, a retired printer, related the interesting history of printing and its role in the development and preservation of our advanced civilization. It appears that to maintain our high level civilization, we are dependent upon the Writings (including all printed matter), Artifacts, Speech (oral history), and Songs handed down to us from previous generations.
A psychological question: What know-how and skills would a new human have if not exposed to any of above? Would such a person have any innate skills or knowledge not possessed by primitive man?

Each State must contribute, and most States are strapped for money. Without more help from the federal government, there would have to be drastic cuts in Medicaid payments. And the federal government is already in trouble with Social Security and Medicare. So, what should we do?

Space solar power could transform the Earth's economy, according to an article in yesterday's N Y Times. 'The idea is for satellites in geostationary orbit to collect the sun's rnergy and convert it into radio waves for transmission to surface stations, where it will be converted into electricity for local power grids.' It appears there are several companies that might achieve this. This is the first I have heard of this. It could really hasten the wide use of solar energy.

The Sun and the Oceans

The sun keeps us alive. We are completely dependent upon the sun. The amount of energy produced by the sun is beyond our imagination. And we need more energy. We have a shortage of usable water in many parts of the world. Yet our oceans cover the great majority of the earth's surface. There is no doubt in my mind that some day man will be able to obtain all the energy we need from the sun and all the usable water we need from the oceans. Could it be that God has provided us energy from the minerals in the ground and freshwater as rainfall until man has learned to effectively harness what we need from the sunshine and the oceans?

Clarification re voting

The 'Kansas City ballot' I referred to in yesterday's blog is the ballot distributed by 'The Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners,' which has jurisdiction over all of Kansas City, MO that is south of the Missouri River. The parts of Kansas City, MO located in the counties of Clay, Platte and Cass are in other election districts and in those districts some of the judges to be voted upon are different than those appearing on the ballot of the'Kansas City Board.'

Voters Ousting Judges

The names of some 21 judges are on the Kansas City ballot in the November 2 General Election. They were all selected under our non-partisan court system. You vote separately on each judge, as to whether to retain in office for a specified number of years, or to kick out of office. To be retained, each must receive a majority of the votes cast as to that judge. Unless you know that a judge is unfit to continue in office, it is very important to vote for retention. There are organized efforts to repeal our non-partisan plans and return to the very undesirable popular election of judges. Many who favor such return, vote no as to all retentions. Hence, apathy of the voters in not voting for retention, can lead to the ouster of well qualified judges. I believe that none of my former colleagues on the Bench would have become judges if they had to be selected and retained on a political basis.

Off with the Necktie

For the Chef's dinner last nite at Kingswood, I wore my dark dress suit, a clean white shirt, and even black leather shoes---but no necktie. I was daring---because I had never gone without a tie before when in full dress. To my surprise, Jan made no complaint. If we had been going to church, she would have.
Putting on a necktie is such a nuisance---the biggest reason for not wanting to dress up. So I have been thinking ---there's no good reason for having this knot around your neck. If you want decoration, throw on a colorful scarf.

Tunney-Dempsey Fights

Today is the 84th anniversary of the Gene Tunney--Jack Dempsey fight for the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship. And this is the publishing date in the United States for the book "The Prize Fighter and the Playwright: Gene Tunney and Bernard Shaw." Why am am I excited about this? Because the author of the book, Jay Tunney, son of Gene Tunney, is married to my wonderful niece Kelly Tunney, and I have long awaited this book, detailing the interesting relationship between Gene Tunney and George Bernard Shaw. Back in the 1920s a fight for the title of Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World was comparable in significance to today's game for Super Bowl championship. There were two fights between Dempsey and Tunney. The first one, being celebrated today, was held in Philadelphia Sept. 23, 1926. The second, a rematch, was held at Soldiers Field in Chicago on Sept. 22, 1927, drawing a crowd of over 100.000 people, and resulting in gate receipts of over two million dollars, by far the largest gate in entertainment history as of that time.

Conclusions about nuclear weapons

The consensus of those attending Philosophy Class today: It's not feasible to try to stop the construction of the Honeywell plant for the manufacture of nuclear weapon parts in South Kansas City. But we should express our deep concern about the production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons; that there should be a major reduction in the stockpiles of such weapons; that the treaty signed by President Obama with Russia, now pending before the senate for ratification, is a step in that direction; that there could be circumstances where the limited used of nuclear weapons might be necessary for our survival. Quoting from the Catholic Key Blog of Sept. 2: "Let us make a decision for all mankind: that one day this facility (in South Kansas City) may be transformed from a producer of weapons into a producer of goods that benefit all mankind."

Should we extend the tax cut for the rich ?

That seems to be the hottest national political issue. The Bush income tax cuts that we have all been enjoying, come to an end Dec. 31 unless extended. Most all seem to be in agreement that the tax cuts should be continued for those whose household income is less than 250,000 dollars per year. But should it be continued for those making more than that? No one seems to know which would be best for the national economy. And I sure don't know. The Republican leadership favors the extension for the rich. The Democratic leadership is opposed. It is estimated that there will be a loss of revenue of about 700 billion dollars over the next 10 years if the tax cut for those making over 250,000 is extended. What do you think?

Jimmy Carter

Maybe Carter wasn't such a bad president after all. He was interviewed last night on 60 Minutes concerning his new book "White House Diary." The book is based upon upon some 5,000 pages of a diary that Carter kept while president. Carter stated that we would have had a comprehensive health care law back in 1979 if Ted Kennedy had not blocked it. He further stated that he succeeded in getting passed in Congress more major legislation than any president since Johnson. Carter's administration was plagued by a bad economy and the 52 Americans held hostage by Iran.
I met the Carters at Independence when he received the Truman Award. A charming friendly couple. Perhaps Jimmy was too honest and candid for his political good.

The Church and Social Issues

My main complaint concerning Sunday worship services in most churches is that little or no attention is given to the social issues of the day. Study of the Bible and the Christian life is needed, but some sermons should relate to controversial social issues, such as pertaining to homosexuality, organ transplants, stem cell research, illegal immigrants and the use of nuclear power. I am a methodist. The General Conference of the church has adopted guidelines concerning most of the great issues of our time. These are printed in a pamphlet entitled "Social Principles of he United Methodist Church 2009-2012:" In this pamphlet it is stated:
"It is recommended that this statement of Social Principles . . . . be emphasized regularly in every congregation."

Nuclear War

At our Philosophy Class on Sept.22, before zeroing in on the question of whether a nuclear parts plant should be built in South Kansas City, I perceive the following issues for discussion:
Should defend our country by physical force when attacked (or be pacifists)?
Should we ever militarily help defend other countries?
Should we ever invade another country?
Should atomic bombs have been dropped on Japanese cities?
Should we ever use nuclear weapons in defense of our country?
Would we ever be justified in our striking an enemy first with a nuclear attack?
Should we develop nuclear plants for energy?

Huge build-up for the Chiefs on Monday Nite Football in the new Arrowhead. The capacity crowd is on fire. At 9:15, when the time has arrived for the big broadcast--my TV screen is blank for 10 minutes---Technical Difficulties. Early in the game the rain comes--heavy rain, with thunderstorms predicted. The Chiefs have exciting big plays and are leading 21 to 7 at half-time.
The Chargers come roaring back--score a touchdown and seem unstoppable. Fast forward:
the Chargers have the ball on our 6 yard line, fourth down, needing a touchdown to tie--39 seconds remaining. The crowd noise so loud you could cut it with a knife. This play is the game.
Quarterback Rivers throws a pass into the end zone--but it was broken up. What a way to start the new season. I doubt if we need to worry about black-outs now.

After a new low for KU athletics, what a thrill to see KU beat No. 15th ranked GA Tech 28-25 in football yesterday. This appears to be a new beginning for KU football. A new coach--Turner Gill. who takes the nice guy approach, and focuses on developing character in his players. A red-shirt freshman Jordan Webb as quarterback--and a true freshman running back James Sims--both had outstanding performances.

Donald Trump's offer

Nuclear Weapons Plant

Yesterday was the groundbreaking for the one billion dollar plant for the manufacture of nuclear weapon parts on a 1.5 million-square-foot campus in South Kansas City. It will be operated by Honeywell, which has been operating such a manufacturing plant on Bannister Road in Kansas City. At the new facility, 2100 jobs will be retained; 1500 construction jobs will be generated; Honeywell employees will pay approximately 1.7 million dollars in earnings tax to Kansas City each year; 5.2 million annual property taxes will be generated; and the Grandview School District will see its annual tax revenues from the site jump from 652 dollars to 1.6 million dollars.
But from a moral standpoint, should we allow this plant to be built? This will be the subject of discussion at our Philosophy Class here at Kingswood on September 22.

Perkins' hasty departure as Athletic Director at KU brings to mind something I have been advocating for some time. Intercollegiate sports has gotten out of hand. It's all about money now. And collegiate basketball has become a one year prep school for the NBA. In the meantime a majority of the students have become watchers instead of participants. Colleges are intended to be centers of learning. Let's eliminate intercollegiate sports, and let's get all students participating in intramural sports.

We needn't be purfect

in most things we do. In doing a story with my camcorder, I no longer spend much time in editing. I'll leave attempted perfection to the professionals. That way it is more enjoyable to me, and what difference does it really make if occasionally my finger blocks out part of the picture, or there is a sudden shift of the camera and all you see is a blank wall. In a performance by a pianist on stage, professionals in the audience may be waiting breathlessly for the slightest mistake by the performer. But for more enjoyment for both a performer and the listener, I say relax and just enjoy the music, not worrying about an off-key note or two. In your household---sure---keep it clean and orderly, but don't worry about something being askew just because you expect company. Above are just a few examples. In your many activities---be your best--but ENJOY-- you needn't be perfect.

Your Favorite Music

Our Fantastic Sun

The sun arose at 6:50 this morning. I arose about the same time, and from our fourth floor apartment facing East could see it as it arose above the horizon. We will have this clear arising view until in December, when the sun arises from behind a building on the horizon. But soon after the the winter solstice (December 21, the shortest day in the year), we will be able to see the sun arise again as it heads back north. It is so amazing --the power of the sun, 93 million miles away and burning brightly for billions of years (forever, from our point of view)--and moving with such predictable regularity. We have a lot to learn from the sun. What comes to my mind is it being a role model for DEPENDABILITY. The next event concerning our sun occurs at 10:09 PM CDT September 22--the autumnal equinox. Then the nights and days are of approximate equal length all over the world. This is considered the beginning of Fall. An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun. The other equinox occurs March 20--the vernal equinox, considered the beginning of Spring.

The Senate Filibuster

One way our democracy could be improved is by changing the rules as to filibustering in the U. S. Senate. This comes from an article in the New York Times 8-28-10. The widespread use of the filibuster is a recent development. Part of the problem lies with today's partisan culture, in which blocking the other party takes priority over passing legislation or confirming candidates. For instance, a bill to extend unemployment benefits in late 2009 faced two filibusters--despite its bipartisan backing and its eventual passage 98 to 0. To pass the bill, it took 4 weeks, including 7 days of floor debate. Under the present procedures, the burden is on the majority party to end discussion and bring ta bill to a vote, rather than on the filibustering minority to prevent a vote. Now, if a single senator objects to a cloture of debate, the majority must have 60 senators, on the floor, to vote in favor of cloture. The rules should be changed so that to continue debate on a bill 40 senators, on the floor, would have to vote to continue the debate, and this vote could come up every 3 hours while the senate is in continuous session.

With my camcorder, I have made movies and put on DVDs the Life Story of several people. Recently, a woman here at Kingswood, who has had a very interesting life, asked me, "Why would I want a video of me?" I have given much thought to this question.
In telling your story, think of relating it to a grandchild or yet unborn great grandchild. Make that descendant proud of being in your family line. Pass on to your descendants the interesting stories and experiences and information you have gained from your ancestors. And don't hesitate to tell about your achievements and accomplishments; and about your handicaps and times of despair--but how you have overcome them. And tell about your joys and fun times and wild experiences.

Stan the Man

An article in the Kansas City Star raises the question as to whether NICE guys can win in sports I nominate Stan Musial as an example of a winner who is nice. Stan is he subject of the cover story in Sports Illustrated 8-2-10. (The article happened to be written by Joe Posnanski, former sports writer for the Star). Stan, who will be 90 next Nov. 21, and played with the St. Louis Cardinals for 22 years, is one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Yet he is modest. He loves people, and likes to make them happy. And everyone loves Stan (except for one pitching to him) He was never too busy to sign his autograph When he had a bad year, he asked to have his salary be cut. He has been married to his childhood sweetheart for 70 years. We need more like Stan.

We have learned the hard way that the MO vehicle dept is no longer sending out a notice that your driver's license needs to be removed. After a certain time period, if you have not renewed, you have to start all over again with a written test and a driving exam. Jan spent most of two days getting a new license because she had not noticed that she was driving with an expired license.

Time and space--mind boggling

I thought that our known universe was pretty big---millions of LIGHT years across it---but last nite on the Science TV channel scientists expressed the view that there might be more universes---maybe many more. At the last session (the 10th) of my Philosophy Class here at Kingswood, we discussed Better Speech. One of the keys to better speech is better breathing habits. Most of us tend to do shallow breathing--- from the chest instead of the abdomen. I have concluded that the best way to get acquainted with deep breathing is to think of pushing OUT your belly (your abdomen) as you inhale. It is most demonstrative, if you lie on your back, knees bent, and inhale thru your mouth. You can practice this exercise at any time: while sitting standing, walking or lying down.

Sunday Concerts

Last Sunday I attended three concerts:

Gene Lowry, jazz pianist, at the Broadway United Methodist Church; the Youth Symphony of Kansas City (granddaughter Rosie was one of the violinists); and Ruslan Biryukov, Cellist, at the Mu Phi Epsilon Musicale. Nothing but classical music at the last two events. I was trying to be very open-minded, as to which I really enjoyed the most. It was the jazz. My wife tells me that classical music is by far the best. I admit that by studying and listening to more classical music, you would enjoy it more. But for an older person, you might spend the rest of your life, trying to fully appreciate the classical. Is it worth it? Music, through listening and participation, should bring you great joy and comfort.

This is the International Year of Astronomy--Galileo made use of the newly invented telescope in 1609 to explore the sky. And this is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. In commemoration of this, Linda Hall just opened a special exhibit entitled the Grandeur of Life. I re-discovered Linda Hall this morning. What an exciting place! And it's all free. Hours are: Mon. 9-8:30, Tu-Fri 9-5, and Sat 10-4. And while there you may want to walk around the beautiful grounds, featuring some 450 trees, 165 different species. Everyone likes his/her freedom. We don't like the government telling us that we can't do things. But our freedoms are necessarily getting more restricted all the time---as our population increases, as we depend more upon one another and as our government finds it necessary to spend more for general welfare. There has been resistance to any reduction of our liberties, including speed restrictions, use of drugs, gun control, helmets for motorcyclists, bans on smoking in public places, required automobile liability insurance; and now we have proposals for required medical insurance and for elimination of texting while driving.

Keeping Things

In down-sizing my belongings, I have come across many letters, documents and pictures that are priceless--things I may never have looked at again, but for the down-sizng. The moral is: at least every few years, take time to examine and enjoy your belongings that are not kept in sight. I'm afraid most of us save far too many things . It is better to save fewer and occasionally take time to reminisce, than collect, collect and collect, leaving it to your children or heirs to dispose of. No other person has as much interest in your things as you.

A unique experience

64 years ago, while I was still single, I roomed at a home at 120 West 62nd Terrace in Brookside. I frequently ate dinner at a small restaurant, just one half block south, on Brookside Terrace. Now the Brookside Market stands where the rooming house was located. The small restaurant is no longer there, but just one half block farther south on 63rd Street now exists Sharp's Restaurant. Last night, Jan being out of town, I had dinner at Sharp's. I was luckily seated by a big window overlooking 63rd Street. I had time to reminisce. I had a strange feeling--following my footsteps of old--but seemingly in another world. I saw many people go by, walking , running, biking and by car. But I probably saw no one that was alive 64 year ago.

A small shingle nail in my left rear tire, causing a slow leak, brought me to the BP gas station on Stateline, and closer to Sid Willens, who happened to be there at the same time. He sent me a copy of his Charles N Kimbal Lecture, which contains many words of wisdom. Among them: Never say yes when you want to say no. The surest way to failure is to try to please everybody. Treat all disasters as mere incidents and none of the incidents as disasters. It's amazing the special attention you receive when you make people laugh and smile. Research shows that people who lose themselves in the service of others live longer, have stronger immune systems, have fewer heart attacks, and have a deeper sense of meaning and purpose than those who work only for the buck. The next time the doctor says not to worry you'll live to 75 and you are 75, laugh and say you found a doctor who didn't lie to you.
Sid is setting a wonderful example for all of us in living a happy life, dedicated to helping others.

MISSOURI DRIVERS BEWARE

The Missouri License Dept. is no longer sending out notices conerning renewal of your four year driver's license. We learned this the hard way.
At our bank, it was noticed that Jan's license expired last February. Since it was more than six months, she had to get the booklets to prepare for the written examination; spend an evening studying forthe test: make 2 trips to the office at Grandview; and a trip to Lee's Summit to take the driving test.

Where are the tennis players ?

I drove over to the tennis courts at Minor Park last Saturday morning. The 12 courts were in excellent condition, the nets were in good shape and at the proper height, and the weather was perfect. But only two courts were being used. Two young men were practicing on one court and on the other court two 86-year-old men were playing. I asked one of the older men, "Where are the tennis players?" His reply, "They are indoors." What a pity that these beautiful courts are not being fully utilized. When I played on these courts with regularity, years ago, at times all courts would be filled and there would be a waiting list. Big question for the city (that maintains the courts): What action, if any, should be taken?

My friend Gene Lowry has three distingushed careers: as a Professor, as a Preacher, and as a Pianist.
For 30 year he was Professor of Preaching at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. He has written some seven books on preaching, plus numerous book chapters, encyclopedia sections and journal articles. He served as president of The Academy of Homiletics. He has taught and lectured in some 50 theological seminaries in the United States.
He served a Senior Pastor of the College Heights Methodist Church in Kansas City, as an Associate Pastor at the First Methodist Church in Wichita, and at the Country Club United Methodist Church in Kanas City, and he has been guest preacher on countless occasions.
But to many people, Gene is best known a a pianist. It is an electrifying experience to hear him beat out hymns to the rhythm of jazz.
Perhaps Gene's greatest honor is coming up this Fall. He has been chosen to deliver the prestigious Lyman Beecher Lecture on Preaching at the Yale Divinity School. This lectureship was established in 1871. Among the distingushed lecturers for this annual event: Henry Ward Beecher and Phillips Brooks.

It is time to take seriously the matter of passing germs by handshaking. The world health organization is going to declare swine flu (H1M1) a Pandemic.

At the opening of some schools in Atlanta, the students are advised not to shake hands or give high-fives. Why take a chance on spreading germs, when there are Other Forms Of Greeting (OFOG)? And why wait until the flu season begins, or until the government mandates? Besides, greetings can be more interesting if done in other than the traditional way. Let's show a litle originality. One good way is to simply look the other person straight in the eyes and say his/her name distinctly and with sincerity. Another, is the knuckle touch. Bowing your head is another possibility. My wife Jan likes to combine the bowing with hands togther in front, like they do in in some oriental countries.

I was tortured-- in prison

At least that's the way I felt--during several days of confinement in a hospital recently. (The outcome was all good--eliminating blood from my urine). In bed--with instructions not to get up (for 3 days)--with three body attachments--cables everywhere--not being able to turn--covers that wouldn't stay on--and being awakened after any kind of sleep.
What a relief--home in my own big bed last nite--no cables or attachments--no awakenings to check my vitals--and my big blue blanket remaining in place, covering everything.
The moral: you need to suffer for full enjoyment and appreciation.

Real f a s t driving

Yesterday, for no reason, I was recalling the times I was in a car going REALLY fast. These I recall: (Voluntary:) Riding with my room-mate Norm in his new Lincoln Capri--on straight stretches of Hi 50 from Wichita to KC on a quiet Sunday morning--up to 125 miles per hour. (Involuntary experiences:) Hitchhiking a ride from Louisville back to my army camp at Fort Knox, on a late Saturday night (we almost turned over at the first turn before we even got out of town); riding with a court reporter thru the Flint Hills, coming back to KC from Cottonwood Falls (I should have asked to get out, right after the driver started up with full throttle); riding with my girl friend in a car driven by a guy trying to catch a train at the K C KS stop. He said he would get there on time, even though we left for the ride one minute before train departure time. I don't know whether the guy caught the train, but I'll never forget those skids on the fast turns.

What experiences do you recall? (NASCAR drivers are not eligible to respond).

Old at 59

This picture shows how close we people over 59 came to being considered young. At the British Open Golf Tournament, Tom Watson from Kansas City had a one stroke lead. He was about to do the impossible: to win a major golf tournament at the old age of 59. By going through 4 strenuous days of golf, walking all the way, through the hills, with strong winds, and competing against those 20 and 30 years younger, he would prove that at the age of 59 you still had the muscle and vitality of youth. On Sunday, the final day, standing on the green of the last hole, he had a one stroke lead, his ball being about 9 feet from the cup. All he had to do to win and to declare for victory for all oldsters, was to push that ball into the cup in one stroke. He missed by inches. That's how close we came to being young again.

Avoiding mosquitoes

You can't, if you ever go outdoors. But you can do things to lessen your chances of getting a mosquito bite. There is an excellent article on this subject at www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef005.asp The highlites: Eliminate water accumulating at any point, in a any kind of a basin or place on the ground; avoid sitting out at dusk or nite, but if you are going to be out, spray your skin and clothing with a repellent with diethyl toluamide (DEET).

He's making a DIFFERENCE

John Erickson has been the leader and coach of The Morris/Cooper FCA Bible Study Group for 23 years. The Group, with 60 men in averge attendance, meets at the Village Presbyterian Church on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 AM. I have attended the last three sessions.

In college, John was a star basketball and tennis player. He was head basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin. In 1968 he was selected to be the General Manager of the expansion Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association. My very good friend Bob Trebilcox, now deceased, won an automobile as a prize for suggesting the chosen name of Bucks. The Milwaukee Bucks became NBA champions in three years--in large measure because of John's outstanding leadership. In 1970 John was selected as the Republican candidate for senator from Wisconsin. He lost to the incumbent William Proxmire. John was called to be National President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), a national youth ministry, in 1972 . He served as its president for more than 15 years.. Following his role with the FCA, John served as the Director of Basketball Operatons for the Big Eight Conference for eight years.

John remains much in demand as an inspirational speaker. It is a rare opportunity to hear him speak, whether he is conducting a prayer or Bible study group, or addressing a group of athletes, business group, or other group.

In his appearances, he is always encouraging his listeners TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, and TO PASS THE SALT. Well, it has oft occurred to me that here is a man, who himself is making such a difference in the llives of hundreds of people--when you think of all the huddles of young athletes, and other groups of all ages and all walks of life, that he has addressed.

This woman--Myrtle Bennett--murdered her husband, her bridge partner, after he failed to make a 4 spades bid. This happened right here in river sity. The moral is: don't have your spouse as your partner. Hazardous waste disposal

Recently I took some old paint, pesticides and cleaning materials to the K C MO hazardous waste disposal facility. What an ordeal ! The most hazardous part was getting there and back. Anyhow, if you need to go there, this is the way:
Call 784 2080 to make an appointment. To drive there from the southwest: Take 435 East to Front St. (last exit before you hit the MO River); west on Front to Chouteau Trfwy; north on Chouteau (maybe quarter of a mile) to Deramus St.; east on Deramus to 4707 Deramus (turn right on a street just past the big recycling center).

Spiritual, but not religious

If you are not a member of a church, but feel that you are spiritual, you are not alone. About one-third of all the people in this country are in this category. This was brought out on the Steve Kraske Up to Date program on KCUR last Monday, June 15.

Many interesting issues came to my mind after listening to the show:

Just what does it mean to be spiritual? Can you really be spiritual if you don't attend a church? Just how do you practice spirituality? Should you participate in a church service if you don't believe in the basic doctrines of that church? Can morality be maintained without religion? Do you believe in a God or a supreme power of some type? (If so, define). Do you pray or meditate? Should all religions be maintained? If you are spiritual but not religious, would you like to meet with others having similar views? How would you change a church service to make it acceptable to you?
